A look back

Dec. 2, 1960— Mrs. J. S. Martin and Mrs. Jack Gamble are the supervisors for the newly organized Brownie Scout troop of Hartselle Elementary School.
Dec. 2, 1960-The Rodeo Theatre in downtown Hartselle has installed a new sound system.
Dec. 2, 1960-The new telephone directory includes 38 Johnsons, 8 Johnstons, 28 Wallaces, 27 Roberts, 23 Smiths, 11 Jones, and 22 Browns.
Dec. 3, 1960-Dorothy Ann Cox became the bride of Billy Joe Terry tonight at Forrest Chapel Methodist Church. Vows were read by the Revs. Vandon R. Windsor and W. J. Alston.
Dec. 3, 1960-The Morgan County Fox Hunters’ Association sponsored a one-day fox hunt today.
Dec. 3, 1960-Hartselle Youth for Christ sponsored a rally tonight at Pettey gym. Charles Penn led the singing. Sherry Maddox is president of the group and Mrs. C. K. Parker and Roman Higdon are the faculty advisers.
Dec. 3, 1960-The much-anticipated McKendree “country store” was held today at the Hartselle municipal building. Butter, buttermilk, dressed hens, cakes, pies, and candy were snapped up very quickly by eager buyers.
Dec. 3, 1960-Nikki Nicholson is currently enjoying a DAR-sponsored trip to the Alabama state capital in Montgomery.
Dec. 4, 1960-Rev. E. H. Steverson became pastor of Bethel Baptist today. The new preacher will receive his degree from Howard College in January.
Dec. 4, 1960-The Music-Art Group met this afternoon at the home of Mrs. Jeanne Shelton in Falkville. The program consisted of piano and saxophone solos plus readings with settings by the counselor, Miss Annie Ruth Waldsmith.
Dec. 5, 1960—The city plans to purchase tear gas bombs and handcuffs for the police department.
Dec. 5, 1960-Anne Hoffhaus Crane, senior education student at Auburn University, has been elected to Phi Kappa Phi honor society.
Dec. 5, 1960-Billy Joe Johnson, Hartselle, has been elected president of the “A” Club at Athens College.
Dec. 5, 1960-New bus line rates are in effect today. Passengers will pay as they leave on the basis of a zone fare system. The base fare is 15 cents within the city limits of Hartselle. The fare to Flint is 30 cents and to Decatur 35 cents.
Dec. 6, 1960-The MCHS Tigers won their fourth consecutive basketball game tonight at Moulton, trouncing the home team 50-33. The leading Tiger scorer was Howard Vest with 20 points. The cagers are coached by Sammy Moore.
Dec. 7, 1960-All-state MCHS end Jimmy Speegle signed a football grant-in-aid with Auburn University today. On signing, Speegle was quoted as saying, “I like the school and I love that school spirit they’ve got down there.”
Dec. 7, 1960-Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Duncan entertained personnel of Hartselle Hospital in their home on Oak Lane today.
Dec. 8, 1960-J. C. Pettey, principal of MCHS, has been hospitalized after suffering a knee injury.
Dec. 8, 1960-Fire has destroyed a barn at the residence of Will Hartselle on Bethel Road. Stored in the barn were 30 bales of hay, 200 bushels of corn, and numerous expensive farm implements, all of which were consumed by the fire.
Dec. 8, 1960-Making the MCHS senior III first honor roll for the most recently completed six-weeks reporting period were Thomas Burns, Janice Grammer, Joan Howard, Russell Mattox, Sue Sivley, Anita Tankersley, Barbara Thrasher, Barbara Vest, Nancy Vest and Diana Ward.
