A look back

April 14, 1961 – MCHS beat Athens in baseball this afternoon by a score of 4-0.  The winning pitcher was Doug Turney who allowed the Eagles only four hits.  This was MCHS’s second win of the young 1961 season.  Other standouts for Hartselle were Ralph Cash, Wayne Brown and Jimmy Speegle.
April 15, 1961 – The annual Morgan County 4-H talent contest was held at Hartselle Elementary School today.  Assist County Agent Joe Bob Stephenson was in charge of the event in his capacity as 4-H director.  First place in the senior division was won by a Falkville trio consisting of Sandra Shaneyfelt, Janice McCoy and Betty Davis.  In the junior division, Sandra Minor was won following her piano solo.
April 15, 1961 – John and Kathy Warren have entered livestock in the 4-H and FFA Fat Calf Show being held at the Decatur Coliseum today.
April 15, 1961 – Hartselle Scouts along with Scouts from all over North Alabama participated in an exposition at the Decatur coliseum today.
April 16, 1961 – Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Orr of Hartselle announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Evelyn, to Parker Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Jeff Adams of Jackson, Miss. Mary is an MCHS graduate and is currently as a student at Auburn. Parker is also enrolled at Auburn.  The wedding will be on June 10 at Hartselle First Methodist.
April 17, 1961 – Most Hartselle TV’s were tuned in to the Oscar awards program from Hollywood tonight.  Elizabeth Taylor was named best actress for her performance in “Butterfield 8.”
April 17, 1961 – Mrs. Otto Weinman, Sr., age 91, passed away here in Hartselle this morning.  Funeral services will be tomorrow at 2 at First Methodist with the pastor, the Rev. Edward Paulk officiating.
April 17, 1961 – Today was the deadline for filing federal and state income taxes.  Taxpayers were given two extra days because April 15 fell on Saturday this year.
April 18, 1961 – Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at the Peck Funeral Home chapel for Newton C. Thrasher who died at his home here yesterday at age 57.
April 18, 1961 – Mrs. W. L. Carden, wife of the Hartselle First Baptist pastor, was one of the teachers in a VBS clinic held at the church this afternoon.
April 18, 1961 – Paul Burgess, president of the Hartselle Kiwanis Club, was in Decatur tonight to meet with visiting Kiwanis International officials at a banquet at the Decatur Country Club.
April 18, 1961 – Christine Paulk, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. S. E. Paulk, won the Morgan County spelling bee today at Hartselle city hall.  She is a student at Hartselle Elementary.
April 18, 1961 – The MCHS baseball Tigers won easily over Eva in a game played here this afternoon – 10-1.  Roger Curnell was the winning pitcher for MCHS.  Doug Turney, Wayne Brown, and Ralph Cash all had pairs of hits for the home team.
April 19, 1961 – Mrs. Lucile Nicholson, chair of the PR committee of the Morgan County Teachers Association, and Mrs. Faye Parker, legislative committee chair, were in Decatur tonight to meet with legislators representing this area in Montgomery.  Both Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs. Parker are members of the MCHS faculty.
April 20, 1961 – A couple of 750-gallon stills and one with 600-gallon capacity were smashed by Morgan County sheriff’s deputies this afternoon west of Neel, at the top of Lacon Mountain, and south of Massey.  No operators were located.
April 20, 1961 – MCHS beat Danville in baseball here this afternoon by a score of 3-1.  David Puckett got the “W.” In winning, the Tigers got only three hits, two by Rayford Luter and one by Ralph Cash.
