Funeral for Cecil W. Smith, 91, of Somerville will be Fri., Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. at Valhermoso Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel Tucker officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Visitation will be Thur. (today), Sept. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Valhermoso Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Tues., Sept. 6, 2011, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born June 7, 1920, in Morgan County to Eager Smith and Irene (Napper) Smith. He was a member and deacon of Valhermoso Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a military policeman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Grace Smith; a daughter, Carol Sanders; and a son, Kenneth Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lucille Smith of Somerville; two sons, Arlin Downs and wife Joyce and Glen Downs and wife Nancy, both of Madison; three daughters, Rita Lawrence and husband Jackie and Janice Morrison and husband Charles, both of Somerville and Susan Sasser and husband John of Madison; a sister, Cora King of Florence; 14 grandchildren. JoAnn Sanders Kent, Christy Worley, Lee Lawrence, Billy and Sherrie Hopkins, Joshua and Kristy Hopkins, Kelly and Carl Dudley, Heather and Michael Weezer, Dorinda and Tracy Tyler, Darek and Joanna Downs, Brian and Sonya Downs, Nanette Downs, Amanda and Mickey Gentle, Nick and Rosael Sasser and Dan Sasser; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.
