Commission approves fuel station for new Dist. 3 shop
The relocation of the District 3 shop from 1694 Hwy. 55 E to 151 Buster Road in Falkville moved a step closer to becoming a reality when the Morgan County Commission declared the construction of a fuel station as a public works project and authorized Commissioner Don Stisher to negotiate with a contractor for its construction. The move was made at a regular meeting of the commission on July 24.
In a separate but related action the governing body approved payment of $250 to S.S. Nesbitt & Co. for insurance on the property.
Stisher said he and his staff would move into the 14,400 sq. ft. building in late November.
“We couldn’t move sooner because the Hwy. 55 shop building is used as a voting center,” he pointed out. Plus, we’ll still be here to accommodate the countywide Fall Cleanup, which is usually held in late September.”
Stisher was given the go-ahead to have plans designed for a new building last year but stopped the planning process when the Buster Road building was offered.
“We’re happy to have this building,” Stisher stated. “It will provide us the additional space and accommodations we need. It’s a blessing to have it.”
The commission acted on other matters as follows:
•Approved the claim of Betty H. Gillespie for excess proceeds in the amount of $14,800.69 arising form the Morgan County Revenue Commissioner’s tax sale.
•Authorized the transfer of excess sales tax funds into the General Fund in accordance
with state law.
•Authorized the chairman to execute a letter of support on behalf of the Morgan County Commission for the continued support of the Morgan County Community Corrections Program.
•Authorized the chairman to execute the additional federal funding cooperative agreement with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency in the amount of $11,714, effective Oct 1, 2010, through Sept. 30, 2011.
•Authorized the chairman to execute a memorandum of understanding between Morgan County Juvenile and Family Drug Court and the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts regarding a Supplemental Grant Awarded Completion of training in the amount of $10,000.
•Approved the 2013-2014 holiday schedule as follows: Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving (two days), Christmas (two days), New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
•Authorized the chairman to execute the agreement between the Morgan County Area Transportation System and Pope John Paul II Catholic High School to provide transportation services between Aug. 1, 2012, through May 31, 2013.
•Authorized the chairman to execute the 2011-2-012 section 5307 Rural transportation Grant application to assist in the operation for Morgan County Area Transportation System public transit services for the period covering Oct. 1, 2012, through Sept. 30, 2013, in the amount of $361,229 federal operating assistance and $203,295 federal capital assistance.
•Authorized the chairman to advertise for bid for the printing and mailing of the renewal notices for the Morgan County License Department.
•Designated all Morgan County banks as depositories for the Morgan County Commissioner of Licenses in 2012-2013.
Approved certificates to subdivide for Bill R. Nelson, E. Upper River Rd., in District 1 and James Lowell Entrekin, Lipscomb Circle, in District 4.
•Approved May 2012 checks totaling $4,164,034.28.
•Approved a payment of $200 to Danville Booster Club for a football program, payable out of the Tourism, Recreation & Convention Fund.
•Authorized the chairman to advertise for bids for the design, fabrication and installation of historical exhibits for the Morgan County Archives building in Decatur.
•Approved payment to Trident Insurance for legal services pertaining to a claim filed against the Morgan County Commission by Joseph Arias (sheriff) in the amount of $30.
•Approved payment of $46,200 to GBW Architects for architectural services for the jail annex, payable out of the Capital Improvement Fund.
•Approved payment of $250 to S.S. Nesbitt & Co. for insurance on the Buster Road Building in District 3.
