American Legion gives back to community

Special to the Enquirer

American Legion Post 52 of Hartselle recently contributed more than 200 presents to area children as part of their annual Kids Day donation drive.

Gifts were purchased and presented by Post 52 members for local underprivileged children and children with special needs. Students from Hartselle Head Start, Falkville Elementary and Danville Elementary were among those who received the holiday donations.

“The kids really look forward to this time of year, and I’m grateful that our post is able to provide this service,” said Post Commander Michael Ferguson. “A lot of effort is placed into the planning and execution of this drive by Post members. We also enlist many Hartselle High School students to assist us in wrapping the gifts. It is definitely a team effort and wouldn’t be possible otherwise.”

Ferguson thanked several members for their contribution to the project.

“Post 52, and The American Legion in general, have been performing holiday drives such as this for decades,” he said, “but without individual Legionnaires such as Jim Wiley, Jason Hulsey and Robert Train, it wouldn’t happen. Thanks to all those that helped make this drive possible.”

Chartered by Congress in 1919, the American Legion is a nonprofit organization of U.S. military veterans. The Legion is nationally known for providing assistance and guidance to veterans and military personnel, as well as sponsoring community programs such as American Legion Baseball, Boys/Girls State, an oratorical contest and high school scholarship programs.
