Hartselle Aquatic Center will open this summer

After remaining closed last year due to concerns surrounding the novel coronavirus, city officials have plans to open the Hartselle Aquatic Center this season with opening day being scheduled for May 29.

The center has historically been open from Memorial Day until the end of summer.

Hours of operation will be Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-6 p.m.

Mayor Randy Garrison said the hours could change if the number of lifeguards changes before the opening or at some point during the season.

Garrison said finding enough lifeguards to be able to open this year was not an easy task, and city officials are excited to be able to open the Aquatic Center this year.

“It was not an easy task, (but) all involved worked and shared information about needing lifeguards through many means, social media, websites and even word of mouth,” Garrison said. “The city even shared information letting folks know if enough guards could not be hired and trained the pool would not be able to open or would open with limited hours.

Currently 22 people have passed the lifeguard training class and seven more have signed up for the next class, Garrison said.

“I realize a lot of folks were disappointed last year. There are a few changes and will be a few restrictions but it will be good to have the pool in operation and for folks to enjoy the facility,” he added. “All of us are excited to be moving forward with somewhat more normalcy this season.”

Possible restrictions due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic might be put in place at a later date, according to Garrison. Those have not yet been finalized. “Private parties with limited attendees will be offered after regular pool hours, not during open swim times,” he said. “No swimming lessons will be offered this year. Lap swims in the morning will be offered.”
