Work session set Feb. 13 to discuss new high school

A second work session with elected officials to discuss plans for a new high school has been set for Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at Barkley Bridge Elementary School.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed said a committee composed of teachers, parents and students is meeting regularly and coming up with answers to questions pertaining to the need for a new high school. He indicated he would ask representatives of the committee to share their findings at the work session.
He also said he has requested each department at the high school to evaluate their current status and project their future needs.
"We will have a live document-a paper high school-to look at," he said. "It will show projected classroom and academic area needs for a school of 1,000 students."
The work session was set during the Jan. 9 School Board meeting. In other actions:
Reed said the vehicle will replace a 15-year-old pickup that has been removed from service because of a bad engine. He said he recommended the purchase after considering the cost of repairing the existing vehicle.
Board member Kathy Goodwill questioned the need for the truck since the board voted recently to retain a used surplus mini-bus rather than selling it to the highest bidder.
Reed pointed out that the bus has over 100,000 miles on its use is limited. He added that the truck is not a budgeted item but funds are available to purchase it.
"I don't want it to be perceived that we're not making the best use of our funds," Goodwill stated.
