National Geographic special features city

By Staff
The October 2005 filming of the installation of a Safe-T-Shelter at Hartselle's Fire Station No. 1 is included in a documentary entitled "Anatomy of a Tornado Disaster," which will be aired over the National Geographic Channel on Thursday (today) at 7 p.m. and April 11 at 10 p.m.
The 60-minute film is based on the loss of lives and destruction caused by the Palm Sunday 1994 tornado that struck Goshen, a small community in northeast Alabama. It also includes scenes from other tornadoes that occurred in Pickens and Cherokee counties.
The Hartselle segment addresses how technology is being used to protect people from tornadoes and other natural disasters. It shows the underground installation of a modular storm shelter capable of seating 10 people. It was donated by the manufacturer, Applied Solar Technology of Massey as a gift to the city.
The shelter is 8-feet in diameter and is made from high grade industrial polymer. It has a double hull and its own ventilation and lighting systems. It is water tight, environmentally safe and maintenance free. AST also makes community-size storm shelters and safe rooms.
The producer of the film is Actuality Production of Los Angeles, Calif.
