Walters leaving for Tuscumbia school post

Long-time Hartselle educator Dr. Joe Walters is taking over the helm at Tuscumbia City Schools.
Walters, former principal at Crestline Elementary and current director of instructor for the Hartselle System, was approved by the Tuscumbia board Monday night. He replaces Royce Massey, who retired.
Walters is set to meet with the Tuscumbia board in the next week to work out the details of his contract. He is expected to earn some $112,000 annually with a three-year contract.
Tuscumbia’s system has some 1,800 students in four schools.
Walters, a fixture in the local education system for more than 34 years, said he expects to be on the job by July 1.
In 2005, Walters was among the candidates considered for Hartselle’s superintendent job, a position that eventually went to Dr. William Reed. He had worn a variety of hats in Hartselle’s system, including band director for Hartselle High School, special services coordinator and director of secondary curriculum.
Hartselle will also be losing Walter’s wife, Sheila, a popular first-grade teacher at F.E. Burleson.
