Hartselle officials are hoping the installation of security cameras will put an end to a rash of burglaries at Sparkman Civic Center.
The latest break-in occurred last weekend. Burglars broke through the front window and stole the change machine and change hopper. A small amount of money was taken but the stolen equipment is valued at around $1,200.
This is the fourth time in the last 12 months the Civic Center has been broken into. In the past, burglars have stolen money and damaged equipment, including an unsuccessful attempt to break into the facility’s safe.
Police have stepped up patrols in the area. Park and Recreation Director Frank Miller said the city is also in the process of installing security cameras throughout the facility. There are currently five cameras in operation and 11 more are being installed. Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to call the Hartselle Police Department at 773-6534.
