Blood need reaches emergency levels
By Staff
LifeSouth Community Blood Center, which provides blood to Hartselle Medical Center and others in the county, is making an emergency appeal for donors.
LifeSouth Director of District Operations Ed Downey said the emergency is due to low donor turnout and increased usage at hospitals. The need for blood, particularly for cancer and trauma patients, does not diminish during the summer months.
All of LifeSouth’s donor centers will extend their hours to meet the emergency need. Other blood drives are also being added.
To find a center near you or a donor, call 1-888-979-2707. Anyone who is 17 years or older, in good health and weighing at least 110 pounds is eligible to donate.
