Aug. 13, 1959-Hartselle’s highly talented young trumpeter, Bob Cain, is currently wowing supper club audiences all over the south. He expects to resume his UA studies next month.
Aug. 13, 1959-Hugh Penn and Price Bryant were elected to the board of the Morgan County chapter of the American Red Cross at its annual meeting in Decatur today.
Aug. 13, 1959-University of Alabama officials announced today that the Alabama-Auburn football game, scheduled for Nov. 28, is now a complete sellout. As always, the game will be played at Birmingham’s Legion Field. The Tide will also play Tennessee (Oct. 17) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 14) in Birmingham.
Aug. 13, 1959-Bobby Palmer, president of the Falkville High School FFA, is currently in Bloomington, Ind., attending a meeting of the American Youth Session of Cooperatives at IU. He was accompanied to the conference by C. A. Blevins, FFA adviser.
Aug. 14, 1959-Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McAbee, Hartselle 2, are the parents of a daughter, Jerrie Renae, born at Hartselle Hospital.
Aug. 14, 1959-The Ranch Drive-in Theatre is now showing four big features-Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in “Meet the Keystone Cops,” Marjorie Main and Parker Fennelly in “Kettles on Old McDonald’s Farm,” Van Johnson in “Kelly and Me,” and Maureen O’Hara in “Everything but the Truth.”
Aug. 15, 1959-The MCHS class of 1952 held a reunion tonight at Decatur’s Lyons Hotel. Having primary responsibility for arranging this event were Buddy Puckett (class president), Sue Carol D’Agostino, and Johnny Cain.
Aug. 15, 1959-A local store selling sporting goods is offering a spinning rod and reel combination for $7.95.
Aug. 16, 1959-Mrs. Mary Garth passed away at her home on McGough Street early this morning.
Aug. 16, 1959-Hartselle physician Dr. Fred Sherrill Jr., spoke at Decatur’s Central Methodist Church this morning. He told about his family’s mission plans in Bolivia, South America.
Aug. 16, 1959-The annual all-day singing at Penn’s Church of God was held under the direction of Rev. D. R. Jarrett today. Special guest singers were the Ambassadors Quartet of Birmingham, the Powell-Lacy Quartet, and the McCoy Family.
Aug. 16, 1959-About 8,000 students are expected to enroll when the fall term begins for Morgan County schools on Sept. 4.
Aug. 16, 1959-The newly enacted John Patterson 30 million-dollar school revenue program is the heaviest tax increase ever levied in Alabama under any governor-for education or anything else.
Aug. 16, 1959-Many rabbit hunters are very upset that the Department of Conservation has sliced the hunting season in North Alabama by about two months. Now, the rabbit and quail seasons will open simultaneously in late November.
Aug. 17, 1959-T. A. Motes, Hartselle 3, slid off the road and hit a telephone pole while driving on U.S. 31 today. He attributed the cause of the accident to the wet condition of the highway.
Aug. 17, 1959-The Decatur Jaycees beat Hartselle’s Civics 10-4 tonight to win the Civic Softball League championship. Earl Payne had pitched an outstanding season for Hartselle but Decatur’s bats were too heavy in this last, deciding game.
Aug. 18 1959-Lula Whitten was at home recently. She is now managing the Kuhn store chain in Pulaski, Tenn. Prior to that she managed the Decatur store.
Aug. 18, 1959—R. O. Camp, Shell Oil jobber for southern Morgan County, has purchased a tract of land from O. W. Tanner on Highway 31 South.
Aug. 19, 1959-Dean Jones, popular Morgan County young man who is under contract with MGM movie studios, is currently in this area visiting relatives.
