Sept. 24, 1959-Zana Bailey, a Falkville High School student, was crowned Morgan County Dairy Maid at the dairy show here in Hartselle tonight. The biggest prizes were won by Venita Ann White, Rebecca Prince, and Zana Bailey. FFA winners in the judging competition included M. G. Sibley, Charles Smith, and Billy Maples.
Sept. 24, 1959-Funeral services were held this morning at Bethel Baptist for A. W. Bishop who died at home Tuesday. Rites were conducted by Revs. E. M. Barnes and Charles Moore.
Sept. 24, 1959-The new C &S Supermarket opened here today on North Sparkman Street. Proprietors are D. P. (Dyke) Clemons and his son, Robert Wayne Clemons. The ribbon was cut by Mike Proctor, 6, and Dickie Clemons, 2, grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. Dyke Clemons.
Sept. 25, 1959-As expected, Decatur’s Red Raiders defeated MCHS’s outmanned Tigers tonight by the decisive score of 33-7. Hartselle’s touchdown came when Wayne Brown passed to David Norwood. Jimmy Speegle kicked the PAT.
Sept. 26, 1959-Tennessee upset Auburn today by a 3-0 score in Knoxville, thus stopping college football’s longest unbeaten streak at 24 games.
Sept. 26, 1959-Funeral services were held this afternoon at Bethlehem Baptist for T. R. Jenkins who died Thursday at Hartselle Hospital. Revs. Junior Hill and Roy Hewlett officiated.
Sept. 26, 1959-There was an accident early this afternoon east of Hartselle on Highway 36. Don Vest was pulling a trailer with his 1950 Willys station wagon when it got unhitched and rolled across the highway into the path of a late model Ford half-ton truck driven by Birtie Tapscott. There were no injuries and damage estimates amount to $400.
Sept. 27, 1959-Coach Ralph Jordan and filmed highlights of all 1959 Auburn football games will be featured as a weekly television series this fall.
This announcement was made by Cliff Harper Jr., general commercial manager, Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company, the program sponsor. The hour-long show began this afternoon with the Auburn-Tennessee game films from yesterday.
WSFA-TV sports director Leroy Paul narrates the game films with commentary and analysis by Coach Jordan. Locally they are aired on WMSL-TV, Decatur.
Sept. 28, 1959-The midway at the 1959 Morgan County Fair opened this afternoon at 5. There are 18 rides this year along with numerous side shows and concession stands.
Sept. 29, 1959-The Decatur city commission is being asked by one of that city’s ministers to set up a board of censors that would screen movies and decide which could be shown there. It would also examine literature proposed to be sold on newsstands and make sure it is neither unwholesome nor obscene.
Sept. 29, 1959—Morgan County will spend about $430,000 during the next fiscal year, on the basis of a budget adopted by county leaders this morning. One of the main changes is that another deputy sheriff can be hired and a clothing allowance will permit the deputies to buy uniforms.
Sept. 29, 1959-The film “Unwed Mother” is now showing at the Ranch Drive-in Theatre.
Sept. 30, 1959-There are several “girlie shows” at the Morgan County Fair now in progress in Decatur. That city’s police are watching the shows carefully to ascertain if they are in violation of the municipal code.
Sept. 30, 1959—Willie Harvel passed away at the veterans’ hospital today. Hartselle relatives include a brother, Ben Harvel, and sisters, Mrs. E. R. Lott, and Mrs. Joel Sandlin.
