Lessons from doors
The other day, my wife and I had a new front door put on our house. The original door was 28 years old, made of untreated wood that was not properly primed and painted before we bought the house, so it started to rot. Shopping for new doors was interesting because the doors on our house were built to fit a door jam that was not standard by any means. In fact, we learned our front door with its side panels and top transom were four doors, two that were immoveable, and two that served as French doors. So, we had to have our front door custom built to fit the jam and meet the requirements of my wife in looks and style.
When you are shopping for doors, you start paying more attention to doors. There are so many kinds of doors. Some are very plain and inexpensive. Some are very ornate and pricey. Some are made more to keep people out than letting people in. Some are large and wide, and some are narrow. Some have windows and some do not. The differenc-es go on and on, but it struck me that doors are very much like people—very different.
Some people are very inviting and have a measure of transparency about them, while others are like fortress doors to keep people out more than let people into their lives. Some people are automatic in their openness, while others require keys and codes to get into their lives. Some live very plain lives while others are extravagant in their appearance and lifestyles. If I were to describe myself as a door, it would be a door with windows at the top to let the light in, solid core for some measure of protection, and wide enough to make coming and going as easy as possible. It would be attractive, but not ornate. In other words, it would be the exact doors my wife picked out for our house. It fits us perfectly.
I’m so glad that our God made a door for us so we could approach Him with full confidence and assurance, whether in prayer, worship, or fellowship. What kind of door did God make? Jesus said, “I am the Door (John 10:9).” By His death and resurrection, we have access to a holy God when we place our faith in the risen Lord and call upon Him to forgive us and save us from our sins. Enter the Door that leads to life.
